Frozen Shoulder

ALL PROBLEMS

What is a Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in which the shoulder joint becomes stiff and painful, with a limited range of motion. It typically develops gradually and can last for months or even years. Frozen shoulder affects the capsule of connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint, which becomes thickened and stiff, making it difficult to move the shoulder. It is most common in people between the ages of 40 and 60, and women are more likely to develop it than men.

What are the causes of Frozen Shoulder?

The exact cause of frozen shoulder is unknown, but there are several risk factors that may contribute to its development. Some of these risk factors include:

People over the age of 40 are more likely to develop frozen shoulder.

Women are more likely than men to develop frozen shoulder.

Any injury or surgery that affects the shoulder joint can increase the risk of developing frozen shoulder.

Prolonged immobilization of the shoulder joint, such as wearing a shoulder sling or cast, can lead to frozen shoulder.

People with diabetes are more likely to develop frozen shoulder.

Thyroid disorders can increase the risk of developing frozen shoulder.

People with cardiovascular disease are more likely to develop frozen shoulder.

EEZ Align Physiotherapy Approach of Frozen Shoulder

Our physiotherapy approach for frozen shoulder generally includes a combination of techniques to reduce pain, inflammation and improve mobility. Some common physiotherapy approaches for frozen shoulder include:

This includes techniques like soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and muscle energy techniques that aim to reduce muscle stiffness and improve range of motion.

Range of motion exercises and stretching exercises that help to improve shoulder mobility and reduce pain.

This includes hot or cold compresses that are applied to the affected shoulder to help reduce pain, inflammation and promote healing.

This is a type of deep heat therapy that is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and promote tissue healing.

This involves the use of electrical currents to stimulate the muscles around the shoulder joint, reduce muscle stiffness and improve range of motion.

The EEZ Align physiotherapist will create a home exercise program that includes exercises that you can do at home to maintain shoulder mobility and prevent the condition from recurring.
